Treatment is determined by the nerve affected and the degree of damage to the nerve or nerves. If non-surgical treatments fail and/or the nerve is severed, surgery may be the best treatment. The goal of surgery is to repair the nerves and restore function.
A repair generally involves firstly carefully removing any injured or scar tissue and then reattaching the ends of the nerves together. If the nerves cannot meet together your neurosurgeon may take a nerve from a non-essential area of the body and use it as a graft to reconnect the nerves.
After a nerve is repaired the fibers inside the nerve start to grow and restore feeling and movement. It is important to be patient and follow your neurosurgeon’s advice because this process takes time and recovery is slow. Physical therapy will also play a large role in your recovery.
