Spinal Disorders

Our neurosurgeons are trained to treat the entire spine, including both the spinal cord and the spinal column.  At NeuroTexas we utilize the newest techniques, including minimally invasive and open techniques for more complex conditions.

The spinal column is one of the most vital parts of the human body, supporting our trunks and making all of our movements possible. Its many functions include balance, movement, spinal cord protection, shock absorption and upright posture. The spine has three major sections: the cervical spine (from the base of the skull and through the neck), the thoracic spine (the center of the spinal column) and the lumbar spine (the lower back). Each section is made up of interlocking bones called vertebrae, which are separated by round fibrous discs (cartilage) that cushion each bone. Nerves pass through the spinal canal, a large passage that runs through the center of the connected vertebrae.

All of the elements of the spinal column and vertebrae serve the purpose of protecting the spinal cord, which provides communication to the brain and mobility and sensation in the body through the complex interaction of bones, ligaments and muscle structures of the back and the nerves that surround it.

Brain Aneurysm & Cerebrovascular Disease

Cerebrovascular disease refers to an array of conditions that affect the flow of blood to the brain.  These conditions include aneurysms, cerebral thrombosis, embolism and hemorrhage.  Obstruction of blood flow to the brain may lead to a stroke and or loss of brain tissue.

An aneurysm is a weak area in the wall of an artery that supplies blood to the brain.  This weakness causes a bulging or ballooning out of the artery wall.   If the aneurysm ruptures the blood will spill out of the artery into the brain and /or space around the brain.  This rupturing may lead to brain damage or even death.

Our Center for the Treatment of Brain Aneurysms and Cerebrovascular Disease utilizes both endovascular techniques and open surgery to treat these complex conditions.

Brain Conditions & Neuro-Oncology

Our Brain and Neuro-Oncology Center provides fully integrated care for cerebral conditions and the most challenging brain tumors using both surgery and radiosurgery.

Neuro-oncology refers to tumors within the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerves.  Any abnormal growth, whether benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) on or near the central nervous system, can place pressure on sensitive tissues and impair function.   Tumors occur more commonly in the brain and skull base.  Often treatment involves a combination of both surgery and radiation and/or chemotherapy.  Our neurosurgeons have both extensive training and experience in treating neurological tumors.  They will work closely with your health care team to devise the best treatment plan to meet you individual needs.

Peripheral Nerve Disorders

Neurosurgeons are trained to treat all disorders of the entire nervous system including both the central and peripheral nervous systems.  The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord.  The peripheral nervous system is responsible for sending messages from the spinal cord to the rest of the body. It plays a vital role in in communication of motor (movement) and sensory information to and fro the brain via the spinal cord. NeuroTexas is pleased to offer our patients excellence in complete neurological surgical care.
